The Winter Haven Chain of Lakes

If there’s one place in Central Florida that truly lives and breathes lake life, it’s Winter Haven — and the Chain of Lakes is the reason it proudly calls itself “The Chain of Lakes City.”

This system is made up of roughly 20 to 22 lakes, all linked together by man-made canals that were originally built for commerce and now serve as the backbone of the city’s outdoor lifestyle. The chain is split into a northern and southern section. The southern chain, mostly within Winter Haven itself, includes familiar names like Lake Eloise, Lake Howard, Lake Cannon, Lake Shipp, and Lake Winterset. The northern chain stretches out toward Lake Alfred and Lake Hamilton, expanding the playground even further.

From a lifestyle standpoint, this chain is hard to beat. You can boat from lake to lake through the canals, spend the afternoon kayaking or paddleboarding, and catch one of the famous waterski shows on Lake Eloise near LEGOLAND. Anglers come for the bass fishing — along with crappie and panfish — spread across roughly 9,000 acres of water. Add in scenic shorelines, multiple public boat ramps, and more than 50 lakes in or around the city limits, and you start to see why people are drawn here.
